Bringing Christmas Back to Nature

Whether you prefer to head out into the hustle and bustle of the high street, or stay at home and shop from the sofa, many of us are armed with a Christmas shopping list as we look to find the perfect gift for our family and friends.

The festive season is such a magical time to spend quality time with our loved ones, watching Christmas films, exchanging gifts and enjoying a merry tipple or two – the most wonderful time of the year as the song goes!

However, from the added plastic packaging on gifts, Christmas crackers and wrapping paper, to disposable products and stocking fillers, Christmas can have a huge impact on the environment.

According to a study by the University of Manchester, this mounts up to an astonishing 125,000 tonnes of plastic packaging for gifts, with a huge amount making its way to our oceans.

Here we share our top tips and gifts to help you to bring Christmas back to nature!

Beauty products that don’t cost the earth…

Here at the Devonshire Spa, we are proud to use products from leading spa brands such as Caudalie, ishga and [ comfort zone ] throughout our spa and beauty treatments. All of these brands have been carefully chosen for their commitment to ethical beauty, sustainability and the environment.

Here is just a snapshot of their environmentally friendly story…
  • Caudalie’s ethos centres around combining the power of science with natural ingredients to deliver excellent results while reducing their environmental impact. Committed to their own “cosm-ethics”, Caudalie products are free of parabens, phenoxyethanol, mineral oil, artificial colourings and sodium laureth sulfate. The ethically conscious brand also uses FSC paper and wood for their packaging, whilst using vegetable inks for their boxes. Guilt-free, luxury beauty – what more could you want?
  • The ishga range is created using the purest Scottish organic seaweed derived from the Outer Hebrides. The seaweed extract, which forms the basis of the ishga skincare range, is 100% organic and produced by the combination of hand harvesting and natural spring water. To ensure its seaweed harvesting is sustainable, environmentally friendly and doesn’t impact the environment negatively, ishga works closely with Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish National Protection Agency (SEPA) which means that not only are their products good to you, they’re good to the environment too!
  • [ comfort zone’s ] Vegan Standard Tranquillity product range contains an exclusive blend of ingredients to deeply nourish, soothe and hydrate the skin. Not only are the products good for the mind, body and soul, the [ comfort zone ] Tranquillity Vegan range is also free from silicones, parabens, artificial colours and animal derivatives. Their choice of packaging is highly sustainable and has zero CO2 impact – win-win! [ comfort zone’s ] parent brand, The Davines Group, was also awarded the prestigious ‘B Lab Best for the World 2019’ environment honouree for the second year running, having been recognised globally for their commitment to ethical and sustainable business across their brand portfolio.

Give the gift of pure indulgence this Christmas with products and treatments, which are good for you and good for the environment! From luxury and conscientious beauty gift sets to an immersive range of spa and beauty treatments, we have you covered at the Devonshire Spa.

Sustainable Wrapping

Did you know that gift wrap is not always recyclable? That’s because it often contains much more than simply paper – the treatment and additions to create the sparkle, colour and simply the ease of folding means that much of it is not recyclable and may end up in our oceans or adding to landfill.

Why not set yourself a challenge this Christmas and take your wrapping back to nature? Try covering your gifts with alternative brown paper or fabric and add festive glitz with ribbon and natural decorations. Experiment with natural accessories such as pine cones, cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices, or add natural twine and ribbon for a classic look – keeping your gift beautiful inside and out…
