Sweat it off…

Here at the Devonshire Spa, we are blessed with a range of first class facilities for our customers to make full use of.

From the Reflexology Foot Baths to the Monsoon Shower, our Thermal Spa facilities always prove very popular with visitors, and none more so than our Essence-filled Sauna.

But what are the health benefits to this steamy therapy?

Stress Relief…

We’re all faced with stressful situations from time-to-time, and when we are, a sauna can work wonders to relieve it. The welcome heat that a sauna distributes relaxes the entire body – it sooths aching muscles, dilates blood vessels and improves circulation, and stimulates a release of endorphins – the body’s natural ‘happy’ chemical.

These endorphins have a mild-tranquilizing effect on muscle fatigue and the increase in blood flow stimulates the body’s natural healing process, which works wonders for minor cuts and bruising. Given that some diseases such as heart disease can be in part stress related, there’s every reason why our Essence-filled Sauna should be a regular part of your wellness regime.

Flush Them Out…

Saunas are an excellent way to rid the body of harmful toxins. The increase in temperature raises the body’s core temperature, resulting in you perspiring. Whilst this might not be your preferred look, deep sweating has a number of health benefits so it shouldn’t be avoided.

Sweating it out in our Essence-filled Sauna helps reduce levels of toxins such as lead, copper, zinc, nickel, mercury and other chemicals which are commonly absorbed during your day-to-day life. Not only can this improve what’s on the inside, it also helps to cleanse your skin on the outside too.

When the body sweats it cleanses the skin by clearing the sweat ducts and epidermal layer of bacteria, and replacing dead skin cells – making saunas one of the strongest strategies to your skincare regime.

Breathe Easy…

Saunas have been found to have huge benefits to those with breathing and sinus problems. A study conducted between 1983 – 1986 at the University of Munich’s Institute of Medical Balneology and Climatology found that steam baths helped those suffering from upper body respiratory problems, and improved symptoms of asthma and bronchitis.

Saunas have also been found to help improve your cardiovascular performance too. As the sauna heats up and your core body temperature rises, your heartbeat also increases – from an average of 60-70 bpm to 110-120 bpm in the sauna. By using a sauna regularly, you inadvertently train your heart and improve your cardiovascular output. By rapidly changing your core body temperature (by plunging into a cold pool or using the Ice Fountains for example) you can do even more for the health of your heart. This quick change in temperature increases your heart rate by as much as 60%, which is comparable to the increase experienced during moderate exercise. (NB; saunas are not advised for those with pre-existing heart conditions. If you suffer from a related condition, please consult your GP before using a sauna).

Sweet Dreams…

Did you know that making our Essence-filled Sauna a regular part of your routine can help you to channel your inner Sleeping Beauty? Research has shown that using a sauna can result in a much more relaxed, deeper sleep than normal, so if you suffer from insomnia, the Devonshire Spa is a great place to visit.

Your body temperature regulates and decreases after a heat-inducing sauna. This action mirrors the body’s natural decrease in temperature which takes place during the evening, and which acts as a subconscious signal that you are ready for sleep. This slow decline is key in facilitating regular, deep sleeping patterns.

Fighting Fit…

By exposing your body to the heat and steam of a sauna, you might not know it, but you are encouraging your body to produce more white blood cells. These little fighters are excellent in helping ward off coughs and colds, and German research has found that regular use of saunas significantly helped to reduce incidences of colds and flu amongst participants.

In addition to this, the heat and steam of a sauna loosens and relieves symptoms of sinus congestion and colds – especially when combined with a congestion reducing scent such as eucalyptus.
